ESO says no to plastic bags in new campaign ..

A pioneering campaign has been launched by the Environmental Society of Oman (ESO), aiming to dramatically reduce the amount of plastic bags used in the Sultanate, over the next years.

The 6 month campaign, fully endorsed by the Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs, received support from Oman LNG LLC. It aims at educating consumers on the impact plastic bags are having on the environment while providing them with ways to cut down on usage and pollution. Residents of Oman will be urged to reduce and reuse plastic bags, while opting for reusable jute bags as a primary alternative. Prior to the press conference, H.E. Sayyid Hamoud bin Faisal al Busaidi said:

'As part of Oman's drive for greater environmental sustainability, we welcome and value today's launch of ESO's anti plastic bag campaign. We urge everyone in Oman to support this exercise and fully play their part in ensuring the success of the campaign. ESO is undertaking this initiative to generate awareness among the people about the dire need to reduce plastic bags from our life and protect the environment.'

With four to five trillion plastic bags being manufactured worldwide every year, the ESO says the impact is proving catastrophic to the environment and both marine and terrestrial wildlife of Oman.
H.H. Sayyida Tania bint Shabib Al Said of the ESO said:

'We are seeing an increasing number of desert, wadi and sea areas in and around Oman, being polluted by discarded plastic bags. Unfortunately, bags are being carried by the wind into these areas and, as a result, many of Oman's sea birds, marine mammals, turtles and land mammals such as goats, are dying unnecessarily. Worldwide, approximately 1 million sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals die every year by mistaking plastic bags for food as well as causing suffocation.'

Taking over 60 years to breakdown, plastic bags are spoiling landscapes and oceans and posing a serious threat to the environment. Countries all over the world are slowly becoming aware of the threat they pose, and are using means such as taxation and laws to reduce it.

Dr. Brian Buckley, CEO of Oman LNG, said, 'Worldwide, thanks to campaigns like this one, we are seeing significant reductions in plastic bag usage and an increase in the recycling of plastic bags. As a long term partner of the ESO, we believe in the importance of this 'first of its kind' campaign in Oman and see it as part of our responsibility to Oman's environment to do everything possible to support it.'

The ESO campaign will focus on educating consumers through a series of roadshows, competitions and marketing initiatives, proving that everyone should take responsibility for preserving their environment.

At the press conference, held yesterday, representatives from Oman LNG signed an agreement with ESO to lend its support to the Society. The agreement signifies the long-term relationship Oman LNG has with ESO, and proof of the company's future commitment to the work of this Omani NGO. Oman LNG's support of the ESO highlights the company's commitment to protecting the environment as well as its continuous support to initiatives promoting best practices and habits aimed at preserving Oman's environment and protecting its flora and fauna.

Plans are already underway to kick off the campaign with a series of fun, educational roadshows in and around Oman's interior areas. With visits to Sur, Sohar, Nizwa, Ibra and Salalah over the next six months, the ESO hopes to spread awareness amongst Oman's consumers while distributing 105,000 reusable jute bags.

H.H. Sayyida Tania bint Shabib Al Said concludes, 'Every one of us can make a difference to our environment by choosing to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic bags in the Sultanate. Through educating our consumers in as many ways as possible, we feel that it is only a matter of time before the damage caused by plastic bag disposal in Oman is significantly reduced.'

The ESO road show begins in Sur on 27th, 28th and 29th November.

Overview::

The Oman Sail Team is made up almost exclusively of sailing novices. Initially recruited from the Sultan’s Armed Forces, The Royal Oman Police and the Sultan’s Special Forces.

Forty volunteers underwent a brutal selection process in February this year with one week in the desert and mountains of the Sultanate and one week at sea. They were tested against the criteria of physical and mental endurance and the ability to learn quickly. Eight remarkable young men were selected. Over the next few years the team will be increased in size by broadening the selection field to all walks of life and, in particular, developing a sailing programme in The Sultanate to identify and develop young sailing talent.

After selection the team had three weeks on Toppers and Hobie 16s; all eight qualified as sports divers and completed a basic first aid training. They then moved up a notch by sailing a 40’ monohull in the eastern Mediterranean and the Red Sea for three weeks.

On the 26th May the team started training in earnest. Based in Cowes on the Isle of Wight off the Southern coast of England, the team are now undergoing an intensive, tailor made course until the end of August when they will move back to Oman. The course is based on a special package provided by the UK Sailing Academy. It includes the full RYA Yachtmaster syllabus; sea survival; first aid; and VHF radio qualifications. In addition they will also train on the Oman Sail Team’s Nacra F18, Extreme 40 (Masirah), and a large trimaran (Musandam). The trimaran has had an illustrious heritage having previously been the B&Q/Castrorama boat that sailed Dame Ellen MacArthur into the history books as the fastest round the world solo voyage under the direction of Offshore Challenges Group.

In the autumn the team will train in Omani waters and the Indian Ocean on it’s Oman Sail branded boats, with professional help, to prepare them for the challenges of 2009.

Oman Sail needs young Omanis who are prepared to be physically and mentally challenged and who are able to work as part of a team. While you do not need any prior sailing experience, you do need to arrive with an open mind and be prepared to both train hard and work hard.

The "International Handicraft Souqs" in Muscat Festival are a place where many Arab and foreign countries who have consistently fallen under the spell of Muscat each year. For this reason, they enter Muscat Festival where they exhibit their rich heritage of handicrafts and folk arts. It's one global village.

Culture comprises a considerable chunk of Muscat Festival activities: the organisation of intellectual and literature conferences, pottery and prose lessons, and educational and artistic exhibitions and workshops. "The Wave" Oman

The Wave, Muscat is the first freehold tourism and residential development to be launched in the Sultanate of Oman. The US$ 805 million project will stretch along 7 kilometers (4.35 miles) of beachfront land overlooking the Gulf of Oman and covers an area of approximately 2.5 million square meters (26.9 million square feet). It will be located in Muscat, Oman's capital city, and will be 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) from Muscat's Seeb International Airport.

The Wave, Muscat will contain an 18-hole golf course designed by Greg Norman, a 300 berth marina, 4 luxury hotels, office buildings, retail and restaurant outlets, and over 4,000 residential units. The residential units of the project will be divided into luxury apartments and townhouses, as well as garden, waterfront and beachfront villas. The Wave, Muscat will also contain low-rise commercial buildings with a total of 40 thousand square meters (430 thousand square feet) of office space, while the shopping retail outlets will range from high fashion to a traditional Omani souk.

The Wave, Muscat was announced in 2005 and will be developed over a period of six years, while the the first set of residential townhouses and villas are set to be completed in early 2008. It is a joint venture between the Omani government (Oman's Waterfront Investments), Omani Pension Funds (National Investment Funds Company) and Dubai-based Majid Al-Futtaim Investments (MAFI). The project has OBM International as its master planners and WS Atkins as its lead architect.

Getting ready for the Superjumbo: Both Muscat and Salalah International Airports will be built with landing facilities that can handle the Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger airplane.

Designers have made sure the airports have room to accommodate the large welcoming parties common in Oman.

The detailed design studies include a high-tech automated baggage system.

The airports’ exteriors are inspired by traditional Omani architecture, but inside, the architecture reflects contemporary trends.

A swanky car sports a sticker that says,” YES, I do own the road.”
Sounds humorous, doesn’t it?
Would you really see humor of it if the owner took the message in the sticker seriously?
Unfortunately, a lot of people do think that they own the roads. The result – utter chaos, endless traffic jams and vehicles caught in peak hour traffic, Missed appointments, missed opportunities, maybe even a missed flight, a thought for your hassled fellow commuter who tries his/her best to follow traffic norms, and pays a price for your thoughtlessness, It’s no achievement being a road hog, you don’t score any brownie points .

On the country, you get on the nerves of people who try and wave out of the way in a bid to avoid a head-on collision. Muscat’s roads have too many cars these days, and to that a bunch of thoughtless people who think it’s fashionable to break all the rules. A sticker that says, “Follow rules, it make life simpler”, has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? We don’t own the road folks, it belongs to us all. Let’s drive responsibly, and make sure we do our bit to ease Muscat’s traffic woes... (( The Week- June 11,2008))

5250-Foot Tower Will Make Burj Dubai Look Like Pencil

Sure, the Burj Dubai tower looks amazingly tall, but it's final height— currently projected to be 2,300 feet— is less than half that of a new building planned for Saudi Arabia. It's going to be 5,250 feet high. Yup, that's just 30 feet short of a mile tall: taller than anything under construction anywhere, and making it easily the world's tallest building. Think they should stick a TV antenna on the top and go for that extra 30 feet? I sure do.
It's going to be built in a new city near Jeddah on the Red Sea and is funded by billionaire Prince al-Walid bin Talal. He bought London's Savoy hotel for a cool $2.5 billion in 2005. So you can suspect that there'll be a hotel in the building somewhere. By my calculations, the tower will have somewhere between 320 and 350 floors, so perhaps that should be "several hotels".
Not much is known about the details yet, other than the fact that it'll have two supporting flying-buttress towers to help keep it up (both more than 800 feet high). It will also have advanced damping systems to stop the swaying at high floors from making people sick, and it's going to need amazing engineering to cope with freezing wind at the top and desert heat at the bottom.
It's so tall that much of the ferrying of material and construction workers will have to be by helicopter. And that's just cool.

The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

Work began on the construction of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque complex on a site by a main road between Muscat and Seeb early in 1995. It was completed six years later and inaugurated by His Majesty the Sultan in May 2001.

The developed part of the site, including the fully consolidated areas and landscaping, covers 416,000 square metres. The Mosque complex (covering 40,000 square metres) is constructed on a raised podium in keeping with the tradition of Omani mosques that were built elevated from street level. It can accommodate up to 20,000 worshippers and consists of a main prayer hall, ladies prayer hall, covered passageways, a meeting hall, and library which will eventually contain up to 20,000 books.

The whole interior of the Grand Mosque is panelled with off-white and dark grey marble panelling clothed in cut tile work. Ceramic floral patterns adorn arch framed mural panels set in the marble forming blind niches in a variety of classical Persian, predominantly Safavid, designs. The ceilings are inspired by those of Omani forts.

The mihrab in the main prayer hall is framed by a border of Quranic verses and a gilded ceramic surround. The dome comprises a series of ornate, engraved stained glass triangles within a framework of marble columns, and a Swarovski crystal chandelier with gold-plated metalwork hangs down for a length of 14 meters.

A major feature of the main prayer hall is the hand-made Persian carpet consisting of . 1,700 million knots, weighing 21 tonnes and made in a single piece measuring 70 x 60 metres. From design stage it took 4 years complete and 600 female weavers from province of Khurasan in Iran were imvoly The Grand Mosque inspired the founding of a contemporary institute dedicated to advanced Islamic studies with appropriate educational facilities and accommodation...=)
